Burford is a Cotswolds town formed on a hill and along the banks of the River Windrush within the West Oxfordshire District Council region of Oxfordshire.  Burford is often regarded as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds, and is located 18 miles west of Oxford and 8 miles north of Lechlade, Gloucestershire.  The town's name finds its origins in Old English, where "burh" signifies a fortified town or hilltop settlement, combined with "ford," referring to a river crossing.

Most of Burford is located within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which restricts development opportunities in the area.  The town is also a popular destination for tourists, and this combination makes house prices relatively high in the area.

Despite the AONB and the historic setting, achieving planning permission in Burford is possible and Matthew has experience of achieving approval within the town's conservation area.  Holmes Architects recommend that most schemes within the conservation area seek pre-application advice from West Oxfordshire District Council, and respect the local planning policies.  The conservation area is located predominantly on the north side of the A40, and the guidance in the local planning policies regarding the conservation area and the historic environment should be adhered to.  Contemporary schemes are possible, however they must be respectful to the character of Burford and be sensitive in their choices of materials.
